 EATING YOUR CHICKEN IN PUBLIC

How hard can it be?

Has a friend told you after an outing, “maaahn, I struggled with my chicken today at the pub, I didn’t know how to do it…”? This happens especially after a meeting with an important personality or one fresh bobo, lol. You may not mind enjoying it your way among your friends or immediate family but nobody wants to be caught unfresh in a formal setting or in a moment of first impression.

We all might have experienced this. Not just chicken, talk about trying to eat that large chunk of cow skin meat in food like okra soup (a popular Eastern Nigerian soup known for its slimy nature). Sometimes, because you don’t want to be disgraced, you just pop the whole meat in your mouth only to find out that was a wrong decision at that moment, you just have to chew with your eyes almost tearing up. Let’s leave it at that, for today I’m going to talk about chicken.

Anyone wants to enjoy his/her chicken peacefully with the proper etiquette. I’m here to tell you that you can achieve that. This can save you from being termed uncivilized in a potential job interview. An interviewer may not just invite you to a pub only to listen to you. Your mannerism may as well be what will qualify or disqualify you for the position you hope to secure.

So let’s head right into it. I will be discussing four ways to eat or handle your chicken in a public.

  1. Eat the chicken with fork and knife

This is the most formal method to eat chicken.  The technique is simple but not for everyone. This involves stabilizing the chicken with the fork in the left hand, cutting out a chewable chunk with the knife in the right hand, and picking it with the fork right into your mouth. You could easily come off with this one if the chicken is soft enough and is not a weird part (like the rib cage, feet or wing) of the chicken.

  1. Eat the chicken with bare hands

Yes, your chicken can be eaten with your hands washed clean. This is the best way to enjoy it with family or friends. It’s comfortable and no fear of any bad occurrence with your eating experience because your grip over the chicken is strong. Remember I am talking about eating in the public here, so remember not to be lost in comfort and eat improperly. Few bites at a time is okay. You can also easily pull off the meat with one hand while holding in the other hand as you eat, little by little.

And in case you find this a little bit boring or uncomfortable, here is another method.

  1. Use a serviette to hold the chicken

Though this is very similar to the above, it is not the same thing. This method saves you the stress of having to wash your hands after you are done eating. And if you are the type that wants to keep your hands moistened with your lotion or cream all day long, this might be the perfect method for you.But watch it, meals that have a lot of humidity or liquid might soak through the serviette thereby soiling your hands except you use a paper towel instead of a serviette. Comparatively, this will go for specific parts of the chicken like the breast, neck or drumstick.

In both methods of using hands, it may be helpful to pull bones of certain parts of chicken before eating them, an example is the wing which involves holding the bone and twisting then pulling.

Request the chicken to be packaged in a disposable plate/box

If all of the other options didn’t work, this should definitely do. It should be the last option on your mind except if you’re in a hurry, want to enjoy with friends and/or family otherwise, order takeaway food. It doesn’t make sense to go eat in a restaurant and then package the meat home? Recipe
